Kano, Nigeria – In a landmark effort to promote peace, conflict resolution, and national development, WAZOBIA conflicts and Resolutions organized a one day programme titled “Special Recognition and Award Presentation to Humanitarians Nationally & Internationally / Fundraising for Vocational Training Center / WACORPAI Official Bus.” The programme held under the theme “Peace Advocacy and Conflict Resolution as Panacea for Development and Sociopolitical Stability in Nigeria” brought together dignitaries, peacebuilders, civil society actors, and members of the public on the noble cause of promoting peace and security in Nigeria
The event highlighted the crucial role of peace building through strategic advocacy, which shall translate into nation-building, as well as honor some outstanding humanitarians and peace Advocates, as well as to stimulate efforts towards funds raising to ensure the implementation of key developmental projects — including a proposed vocational training center and the acquisition of an official operational bus for WACORPAI (Wazobia Conflict Resolution and Peace Initiative).
One of the activities that featured prominently during the ceremony was the special recognition of Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, who served as the Special Guest of Honour and one of the awardees. Comrade Waiya, a reputable peace advocate and former Head of Secretariat of the Kano Peace Committee, was celebrated for his consistent efforts in promoting dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence in Kano State and beyond.
In his address, Comrade Waiya presented a thought-provoking paper on “Peace and Conflict Resolution”, emphasizing that peace is not merely the absence of war but the presence of justice, equity, and mutual respect. He also stressed that no society can thrive economically or politically without first addressing the roots of conflict and embracing peaceful mechanisms for dispute resolution.
"As a nation, our strength lies in our ability to resolve conflicts through dialogue and mutual understanding. We must build structures that promote inclusiveness, justice, and economic empowerment to ensure lasting peace,” he said.
The event also featured goodwill messages, cultural presentations, and testimonies from beneficiaries of previous WAZOBIA peace initiatives. Funds were raised during the programme were planned to be dedicated to the building of vocational training center, to empower youth and reducing unemployment — a major trigger of social unrest in many communities.
Participants described the programme as timely and impactful, given Nigeria’s current socio-political realities. They commended WAZOBIA for its unwavering commitment to peacebuilding and humanitarian development.
As the nation continues to grapple with insecurity and socio-political tension, initiatives like this serve as beacons of hope, reminding everyone that peace is not just a dream — it is a shared responsibility.
