... Defection, defiance and development. Inside Abba Kabir's 1 Trillion victory.
By Shariff Aminu Ahlan
It is both glaring and sensational to witness a rare master of political chess deploying sagacity, courage, and raw influence in the ever-volatile political hemisphere of the state. At a time when the political dust stirred by his decision to join the ruling party is yet to settle, amid heated debates, emotional outbursts, and subjective interpretations,Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has chosen action over argument, results over rhetoric.
In the very heat of the controversy, the Governor set the ball rolling by engaging, pleading, and strategically cajoling the Federal Government to approve what now stands as one of the most historic infrastructural interventions in the state’s history: Over ₦1 trillion mega rail line project.
This gigantic undertaking is not for the faint-hearted. It is a project that tests the resolve, preparedness, and political will of any federal administration. Yet, through tact, persistence, and effective political alignment, Governor Abba Kabir ensured that what many thought impossible was smoothly delivered, culminating in a landmark approval that has already begun to reshape the future of the state.
This approval did not emerge in isolation. It is a direct product of renewed federal-state cooperation, strengthened by the Governor’s strategic decision to align with the ruling party, an alliance that has already begun yielding tangible dividends for the people.
Indeed, the project has emphatically justified the Governor’s much-debated defection. Long before the ink dried on the political realignment, he made it clear to all and sundry that joining the ruling party would unlock unprecedented opportunities, attract mega projects, and solidify a relationship capable of transforming the state’s fortunes. Today, that promise stands fulfilled.
Initially, critics were quick to label his move as selfish, politically reckless, and economically unproductive. Some even went as far as branding it a betrayal of his political benefactor. But rather than engage in noisy exchanges or trade insults, the Governor chose silence, focus, and strategy, waiting patiently for results to shame the doubting Thomases.
His decision to free himself from the suffocating grip of political godfatherism was not borne out of personal ambition, but from an unwavering love for the state and a burning desire to leave behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has since emerged as a high-performing leader, steadily rewriting the narrative of governance with visible and impactful achievements. Since assuming office, his administration has delivered glittering projects across the length and breadth of the ancient city and beyond.
From illuminating streets with durable solar-powered lighting, to completing long-abandoned five-kilometre road projects inherited from previous administrations; from awarding foreign scholarships to deserving indigent students, to revolutionising healthcare through the construction, renovation, and equipping of hospitals across the state, the Governor’s footprints are everywhere.
Road construction and urban renewal have transformed the metropolitan landscape, while the clearance and payment of pension and gratuity arrears—running into billions of naira—have restored dignity and hope to retired workers. In a rare display of fairness and statesmanship, the Governor also ensured the payment of outstanding entitlements to former councillors and local government chairmen, even when they belonged to opposition parties, earning widespread admiration and commendation.
State workers, too, are enjoying a new era of stability and respect. Salaries are paid consistently, hitting workers’ accounts on or before the 25th of every month—a gesture that has forged an unbreakable bond of loyalty between the administration and the workforce.
Education remains the cornerstone of this administration. Thousands of schools have been renovated and equipped with modern facilities, while many more have been newly constructed—an, aggressive push that has repositioned the state as a benchmark for educational development and reform.
Little wonder that the Governor’s impressive delivery of good governance has attracted massive goodwill, admiration, and political fellowship across the state. His soaring approval ratings now signal a looming electoral landslide, as the people prepare to reciprocate his uncommon leadership with overwhelming support in the next election.
Without mincing words, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has proven that true leadership is not about noise, loyalty to individuals, or political theatrics, it is about courage, results, and the ability to deliver real value to the people.
