Kano Unveils Four Strategic WASH Plans to Strengthen Water and Sanitation Services
The documents launched during a stakeholders’ meeting held at Tahir Guest Palace, Kano, include the Kano State WASH Financing Strategy, Kano State Sustainable Basic Sanitation Access Roadmap, Kano State WASH Sustainability Plan, and the Makoda Local Government WASH Strategic and Investment Plan. The initiatives are designed for implementation over a five-year period from 2026 to 2031.
Speaking at the event, the State Programme Coordinator of the WASH Systems for Health (WS4H) Programme, Aminu Musa Idris, described the launch as a major milestone in efforts to expand access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene services in Kano State. He noted that the documents provide a clear framework for sustainable WASH service delivery and urged stakeholders to support their implementation.
Idris explained that the policy documents were developed with support from Self Help Africa under the WS4H Programme, funded by the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and implemented through the Kano State Multi-Sectoral Forum (KANMAF).
Also speaking, the Team Lead and Programme Manager of the WASH Systems for Health Programme, Mr. Timothy Ibeawuchi, said Self Help Africa remains committed to supporting the implementation of the strategic plans to improve access to WASH services at the local government level.
He expressed optimism that the Kano experience would serve as a model for other local government areas across Nigeria, adding that the organisation envisions a future where all LGAs adopt sustainable WASH systems frameworks.
Representing the Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Alhaji Abdullahi Abubakar, reaffirmed the state government's commitment to ensuring the successful implementation of the policy documents.
He assured stakeholders that the ministry, the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), and other relevant institutions would provide the necessary support to achieve the objectives of the initiative.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, Dr. Abdulkadir, commended Self Help Africa, its development partners, and the Kano State Government for developing the strategic documents, expressing confidence that their implementation would positively impact communities across the state.
The event attracted government officials, development partners, civil society organisations, and key stakeholders in the WASH sector, all of whom reiterated their commitment to improving access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene services in Kano State.
