The Kano State Government has constructed fifteen modern toilet facilities at the Goron Dutse Custodial Centre as part of its ongoing efforts to improve healthcare, sanitation, and the overall welfare of inmates.
The development followed engagements with critical stakeholders and the management of the Kano State Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), according to a statement issued by the Command’s Spokesperson, Musbahu Lawan Kofar Nassarawa.
Speaking during the handover of the project, the Commissioner for Rural Development, Dr. Abdulkadir Abdussalam, said the initiative reflects the commitment of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to improving living conditions within custodial facilities across the state. He noted that improved sanitation is essential to safeguarding the health and dignity of inmates.
Dr. Abdussalam formally handed over the facilities to the management of the custodial centre, reaffirming the state government’s resolve to support reforms that enhance humane treatment and rehabilitation within correctional institutions.
In his remarks, the Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Yusuf Ahmed Lakpene, commended the Kano State Government for its sustained support to the Nigeria Correctional Service. He emphasized that proper sanitation plays a critical role in effective correction, rehabilitation, and reintegration of inmates into society.
Lakpene called on other stakeholders to emulate the gesture of the Kano State Government in promoting a safer, healthier, and more hygienic environment within custodial centres. He also assured the state government that the facilities would be judiciously managed and properly maintained.
The event attracted senior government officials, including the Commissioner for Internal Security, AVM Ibrahim Umar (Rtd), the Director General of Special Services, Major General Sani Mohammed (Rtd), and other key stakeholders.
