The Kano State Government has firmly rejected what it described as baseless and politically motivated allegations made by Alhaji Buba Galadima against Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Kano State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Addressing journalists at a press briefing, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the claims of suppression of opposition voices were false, malicious, and deliberately contrived to mislead the public.
The Commissioner stated that the government would not allow misinformation or personal vendettas to distort public perception or undermine confidence in democratic institutions in Kano State.
He noted that similar allegations surfaced shortly after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection to the All Progressives Congress, adding that the recent outburst by Galadima followed his removal as Chairman of the Board of Kano State Polytechnic. According to the government, the removal was based strictly on administrative considerations relating to performance and competence.
“It is evident that these statements are driven by personal grievance and loss of official privilege rather than any genuine concern for democracy,” Waiya said.
The Kano State Government categorically denied ever directing security agencies to harass or intimidate political opponents, emphasizing that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration remains committed to protecting fundamental human rights, including freedom of expression as guaranteed by the Constitution.
However, the government cautioned that freedom of expression does not extend to defamation, incitement, or the deliberate spread of falsehood capable of threatening public peace. It stressed that security agencies, including the DSS, operate within their constitutional mandates and act based on credible complaints and lawful procedures — not political directives.
The Commissioner further expressed concern over what he described as the growing trend of “weaponized misinformation” on social media, warning that the state would not tolerate deliberate attempts to destabilize Kano through calculated propaganda.
He maintained that the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains open and inclusive, with opposition figures operating freely and the media functioning without hindrance.
Reaffirming the government’s position, Waiya stated that Kano State remains committed to democratic principles, the rule of law, and peaceful coexistence. He added that the government would continue to support security agencies in maintaining law and order while protecting the rights and dignity of all residents.
The government also expressed confidence in Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s political standing, noting that his popularity in Kano State remains strong and continues to grow.
The press briefing concluded with a call on political actors and commentators to act responsibly, verify information before making public statements, and avoid sensational claims capable of inflaming public sentiment.
