The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has officially launched the North-West Energize Commercialization Now (ECoN) initiative in Kano State, aimed at improving access to reliable energy and strengthening small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs).
The launch ceremony, held at the historic Coronation Hall, brought together top government officials, lawmakers, and development partners in a strategic effort to boost economic productivity across the region.
In her address, Senator Tinubu described the initiative as part of the Federal Government’s broader commitment to addressing energy challenges facing businesses, particularly SMEs, which play a vital role in economic growth and job creation. She emphasized that sustainable energy access is key to enhancing productivity, supporting entrepreneurship, and driving national development.
The First Lady also highlighted Nigeria’s vast potential in innovation, noting that creative ideas continue to emerge from universities, research institutions, and a vibrant youth population. Despite existing challenges, she said Nigerian innovators are making significant global impact, especially in fintech and enterprise development, contributing to job creation and increased Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
She further stressed the need for inclusivity, calling for greater participation of women and youth in the innovation ecosystem.
In his remarks, Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, commended the Federal Government for selecting Kano as the host for the North-West launch. He described the initiative as timely and aligned with the state’s vision of building a technology-driven economy.
Governor Yusuf noted that the programme would enhance commercial activities, support local industries, and improve the livelihoods of citizens. He reaffirmed his administration’s full support for the successful implementation and sustainability of the initiative, stressing that no economy can grow without innovation, science, and technological advancement.
Stakeholders at the event expressed optimism that the ECoN programme would deliver significant benefits in energy access, enterprise development, and economic growth across the region. Governors from North-Western states also endorsed the initiative, pledging their support for its success.
Dignitaries present at the event included the Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Umar Namadi; the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, SAN; the Deputy Senate President, Barau I. Jibrin; Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa; and the incoming Deputy Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo, among others.
