The Kano State Government Committee on Voter Mobilization and Awareness Campaign, chaired by Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, Honourable Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, has intensified efforts to boost participation in the ongoing voter registration exercise across the state.
In line with the directive of His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Executive Governor of Kano State, the committee has partnered with civil society organizations Engaging International peace and secure society (IPSS) among the CSOs which formed a Quadripartite Alliance to expand grassroots mobilization. The Alliance includes the International Peace and Secure Society (IPSS), Light House Self Reliance Initiative, Association for Adult and Non Formal Education Centers (AANEC), and the Institute for Human Development and Information Technology (IHDIT).
The Alliance had Strategic Engagement with Non Formal Education Centers, On September 6, 2025, the Alliance convened a high level meeting with the leadership of adult and non formal education centers at AANEC Headquarters in Kano. The meeting brought together zonal directors, local government coordinators, and representatives from the state’s nine zones leadership of the Non Formal Education Centers in kano.
Discussions centered on leveraging 701 Adult Literacy Learning Centres, with an active enrolment of 495,400 learners, supported by 6,342 trained facilitators. These centres cut across all Senatorial Districts in Kano State, as detailed below:
Kano Central Senatorial District: 201,500 learners supported by 2,804 facilitators/teachers.
Kano North Senatorial District: 143,700 learners supported by 1,718 facilitators/teachers.
Kano South Senatorial District: 150,200 learners supported by 1,820 facilitators/teachers
The aforementioned centers shall serve as voter mobilization hubs, thereby extending the reach of the campaign to every community.
Resolutions Reached during the meeting are:
1. Deploying 701 literacy centers as voter registration mobilization hubs across Kano State.
2. All members agreed to actively participate in the exercise to ensure wider voter registration across kano state.
3. Utilizing ICT teams from all four Alliance members, including AANEC’s ICT unit, to support the community on the online pre voter registration, polling unit transfers, and related services.
3. Training local government coordinators at zonal and LGA levels, in consultation with the kano state Government committee committee on voter mobilization and awareness campaign, to cascade knowledge to ward and polling unit volunteers.
4. Integrating literacy center representatives into the Alliance’s grassroots structures.
5. Conducting one day specialized training in each senatorial district to strengthen volunteer capacity and ensure smooth operations.
Assurance of Support
Speaking at the meeting, Comrade Dr. Yahaya Danjuma Yusuf, Director General of IPSS, assured participants that requests for required logistics, data, airtime, media engagement, mobility, and training support would be presented to the Honourable Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs who is the chairman of the kano state government committee on voter mobilization and awareness campaign for consideration under the committee’s mandate.
Commitment to Mass Mobilization
The literacy center leadership pledged to fully support the Quadripartite Alliance to reach its minimum target by mobilizing adult learners, their families, and communities, ensuring participation from all 44 local government areas on their collective target to mobilize at least one million eligible Kano residents minimum within three weeks if given full support by the Government.
Stakeholder Voices
In a joint address, Comrade Dr. Yahaya Danjuma Yusuf (DG, IPSS) and Alhaji Abdulmumin Bn Yusuf (DG, AANEC) stressed that voter registration is a civic responsibility and the bedrock of credible elections. They emphasized the vital role of grassroots partnerships in ensuring that no eligible citizen is left behind.
The Alliance has outlined a three weeks action plan covering households, schools, communities, and literacy centers across all 44 LGAs, 484 wards, and more than 11,000 polling units in Kano State. Expanded ICT support systems and the involvement of AANEC, The Tricycle leadership of VOTORA in kano and other groups reached, coordinators will anchor grassroots level mobilization.
This initiative underscores Kano State’s commitment to strengthening democratic participation and ensuring inclusiveness in the voter registration process.
