The Kano State Voters Registration Committee, chaired by Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, is intensifying efforts to mobilize residents for the ongoing voter registration exercise.
As part of its advocacy push, the committee met with the Head of Service, Bilkisu Maimota, and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Muhammad Tajo Usman.
Waiya said the committee was set up to sensitize citizens on the importance of obtaining Permanent Voter Cards, calling it a vital civic duty for strengthening democracy and good governance.
He stressed that civil servants, local government chairmen, political actors, and community leaders must lead by example and encourage public participation. Waiya also noted Kano’s strong showing in previous registrations and unveiled planned activities for the final phase of the INEC exercise, expected to end in July.
He commended the committee secretariat for managing the process with diligence.
Maimota described the initiative as timely and pledged her office’s full support, adding that measures would be taken to ensure civil servants yet to register get their PVCs before the deadline.
On his part, the Commissioner for Local Government, Alhaji Tajo Usman, called for closer collaboration with local governments and said some chairmen were already backing the exercise, urging others to follow suit.
Waiya reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to engaging communities across Kano to ensure more eligible citizens register ahead of the July close of the exercise.
Other members of the committee who spoke at the occasions include the District Head of Rimin Gado, Auwal Mudi, and Special Adviser on Policy, Alhaji DanYaro Yakasai, who emphasized public enlightenment, peaceful participation, and collective responsibility as key to a successful registration.
